Conquest
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
Conquest is a medieval fantasy strategy game inspired by Conquest of Elysium.
This game was originally created for the ZX Spectrum. The goal was to create a game similar to Conquest of Elysium that would run on the ZX Spectrum.
During development, I decided to also add support for SDL on modern machines.

Controls
----------
W = Move up.
A = Move left.
S = Move down.
D = Move right.
H = Hiring menu. (All classes.)
M = Magic menu. (Mage, Druid and Necromancer.)
B = Building menu. (Warrior.)
----------
Startup
----------
When the game starts, you will be prompted to choose a class.
This class will apply to your starting commander and any commanders hired during the game.
You can hire up to 4 additional commanders.
When the game starts, you have one commander and only a small area of the map around your commander is visible.
----------
Points of Interest
----------
There are 4 different types of POI. Towns, forests, mountains and swamps.
Points of interest can be claimed by moving your commander to them.
Any POI claimed by you are identified with a small flag symbol in the upper right corner.
POI claimed by independent commanders or your opponent will have a small asterisk or + sign in the upper right corner.
Claiming points of interest causes the map to remain visible around that tile.
Unguarded points of interest may be lost to independent factions.
----------
Resources
----------
There are 4 different resources in the world which are obtained by claiming points of interest.
With the exception of money, earned via claming towns, these resources benefit specific commander classes.
Towns are a source of the dead (DD) used by necromancers.
Forests provide herbs (HB) for druids.
Swamps provide mana (MA) for mages.
Mountains provide metals (MT) for warriors.
----------
Gameplay
----------
At the beginning of each turn, all commanders get 2 action points.
Action points are used for summoning or building units as well as movement.
To win, you must eliminate all of your opponent's commanders.
Hire archers and fighters or summon creatures to increase the number of units under your command.
Hire commanders to further expand your forces.
Choose your battles and which POI you claim wisely.
----------
Mage
----------
The mage casts a lightning spell during combat, damaging all enemy units.
If mastery is obtained, there is a chance the mage will cast a transformation spell, turning enemy units in to golems.
The mage directly summons units by choice. Either golems or fire elementals.
Mana is gained via the claiming of swamps.
It is helpful to supplement your forces via claiming towns and hiring units.
----------
Warrior
----------
The warrior attacks a single enemy unit, dealing a large amount of damage.
Metals are used to construct the catapult and ballista which are powerful units.
The warrior should rely on both towns and mountains. Constructing units is expensive,
so you will need to hire as well.
----------
Druid
----------
The druid summons animals in forests.
Lesser summoning results in wolves or bears.
Greater summoning results in wolves, bears or tigers.
Mastery is obtained via herbs (HB) gathered from forests.
The assortment and quantity of animals obtained via summoning is random.
Herbs (HB) are required for summoning and are obtained via the claiming of forests.
The druid is less reliant on towns in comparison to any other class.
In combat, the druid will heal the units under it's command.
Druids have an advantage when combat takes place in a forest.
----------
Necromancer
----------
The necromancer summons skeletons, vampires and the undead.
Lesser summoning results in skeletons or the undead.
Greater summoning results in skeletons, vampires or the undead.
The assortment and quantity of creatures obtained via summoning is random.
Dead (DD) are required for mastery and are obtained via the claiming of towns.
Summoning affects the necromancer's sanity (SA).
If this value drops below 50, the necromancer will not gain action points.
The sanity value increases at the end of each turn.
After it is above 50, the necromancer will gain action points again.
Mastery is obtained via dead (DD) gathered from towns.
In combat, the necromancer will resurrect lost undead and vampire units.
Vampires become undead when resurrected.
As a necromancer, it is important to claim an undefended town as soon as possible.
Skeletons are weak and are the only unit the necromancer starts with.
